Group 4: Seminar topic: The virtual experience. The idea of virtual art galleries in Second Life, whether this virtual experience is a valid art experience. Can a virtual experience affect in the same way a physical experience can? Are all imaginative elements in art 'virtual' and 'immersive' or is there a different kind going on in virtual worlds?

Maybe we should add something on the psychological dangers of living in a
virtual, hermetically sealed, isolating, individualistic world? There is some
good stuff out there on this and maybe it's worth throwing into the pot, just
to get some sort of opposing view?

Have just found a very interesting gallery based in Kinsale. It is run by a person named Haydn Shaughnessy, who writes for the Irish Times and other newspapers and magazines.
He along with another guy have created this gallery in Cork, but also have a second gallery in Second Life called 'Ten Cubed'.
Check out the site to have a look at some of the artists. There's also a good essay on one of the artists, Scott Kildall, by gallery owner Haydn. The site address is:

Maybe he would be interested/available to partake in our seminar.

think maybe the 4d room. We can always do the work on the mac's - save them onto cd or memory stick and then set them up on the equipment in the 4d room. We'd better find out how the web chat stuff could work there.

We will be using a lot of technology so we need to get a suitable room/venue. Orla mentioned the mac room or perhaps the video (4D) room. I am on the space committee so I can put forward our requirement. sooner the better

What about setting up a live interactive discussion with actual avators who make art in 2nd life ? Maybe with could contact Richard MInsky, who is an artis and founder of the Centre for Book Art and who launched the first magazine dedicated to the Second Life Art - Slart and try to get him to participate

The (bob ross) games appears to have been cancelled.
The games, which are being developed specifically for Nintendo's Revolution console and DS handheld, will be focused on the art of painting, no doubt harnessing the precision accuracy of Nintendo's control methods. A PC version is also planned.
We're not kidding.
AGFRAG made the announcement yesterday, prompting concerns from skeptics of an early April Fool's joke. We contacted AGFRAG directly for clarification.
"The press release is not a joke, but the side effect of people thinking it is might help us get noticed," explained Joseph Hatcher, who heads up the company brining Bob Ross to Nintendo's systems.
AGFRAG is Hatcher's development group, consisting of students, independent developers and professionals in the game industry. "AGFRAG secured a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement with Bob Ross Inc. just before the Game Developers Conference took place," Hatcher revealed. "We are talking with various companies and plan to make an announcement near E3 regarding which platforms the game will be developed on first, and maybe a surprise."
Hatcher himself admits to being a big Ross fan, which is partly why he wants to make games based on his work. "I personally loved watching Bob Ross growing up and I enjoyed watching how easily he created his paintings. We want to translate that same feeling of watching the TV show into playing a Bob Ross game," he said. "Whether you are an eight-year-old child, or a 65-year-old grandma, we want anyone to be able to pick up the game to create and play to your heart's content."
When we think about videogames, the name Bob Ross does not spring to mind. But the DS and Revolution may be the best systems to bring the Joy of Painting to gamers. "The Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution are perfect platforms for what we have in mind!" Hatcher explained. "We like the way Nintendo carves their own path of innovation and creativity and we strive to do the same."
AGFRAG has not yet secured a publisher for the titles. More news on these projects will be forthcoming beginning this May at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2006 in Los Angeles. Aspiring painters, we'll keep you posted.

WII is a very good idea.
sorry in advance for all the questions, but was in't in last week was of sick.
Where has this game to be delivered from? how many days those it take to be delivered. As if we are going for this, we need to also give time to try and operate it. We could go ahead and purchase, but think it might be best to have some backup plan incase it gets lost in post !!!
I will have a look and see if we could get a painting game for another games console, Xbox, playstation, I have never played any of these game consoles before, who is going to be playing the games? where are we going to get the consoles from those anyone have one or know of anyone that has one? Is the plan just to have one console or mulitple people participating at the same time.

PAINT BY DS
Paint by DS is a digital colouring book which enables the player to recreate
masterpieces by renowned artists. . The player uses the DS stylus to mix oil
and water-based paints to create colours and consistencies and then paint
the artwork. Paint by DS consists of 15 colouring in challenges along with a
variety of fun mini games, such as puzzles based on the famous artwork
included in the game.
Features
Re-create famous works of art using your own artistic style
Artwork by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Katsushika Hokusai, P.J. Redoute and many
others
Mix oil and watercolour paints with the DS stylus or use coloured pencils
Your paintings are critiqued when finished
Paint with relaxing instrumental music in the background
Contains four recreational mini games to "take a break" from drawing
Unlock new paintings, papers, colours and other items by completing mini
games
The DS has hosted many novel new titles, but the release of Paint by DS
marks the console's very first painting simulator. Essentially an electronic
take on paint-by-numbers, the game will let you replicate 15 paintings by
mixing paint and using the stylus as a paintbrush, with finished
masterpieces put on display in a virtual gallery.
Paint by DS will feature paintings by Van Gogh, Cezanne, Pissarro, Hokusai,
Gould, Redoute, and Bozzolini. You start each project by choosing the tools
and materials you want to paint with. There are various types of canvases
and paper available, and you can paint with either oil- or water-based
materials. You can mix colours on a custom palette and save them to your
paint box to apply to the canvas as you need them. If all this sounds a bit
complicated, you can keep things simple by going monochrome with a pencil
sketch instead.
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/186/941863_20070706_screen003.jpgPaint
by DS lets you re-create famous paintings in minute detail, mixing colours
and using the stylus as a paintbrush.
As Paint by DS is a painting sim, you can't undo your actions if you make a
mistake. However, there are realistic painting techniques that you can use
to help adapt your painting as you go along. For example, if the colour you
apply to the canvas is too strong you can add water to the area to thin the
paint out. This technique is also useful for re-creating a washed-out look
to areas of water or sky.
Given this level of accuracy it can take at least an hour to complete a
painting, and maybe even double that at first. However, the game does let
you save your work in progress so you can come back and apply details at a
later date. To this end, you can zoom in on the picture and use finer
brushes to give the painting a professional touch. The top screen of the DS
is used to display what the original painting looks like, but you can take
some artistic license and adapt or embellish as you see fit.
Once you've completed your painting to a satisfactory level, you can choose
to place your signature anywhere on the work and then enter it into the
virtual gallery. Like any artist, though, you're going to have to take
criticism, and the in-game expert will dish out an appraisal of your work in
terms of accuracy and colour.
In addition to the painting exercises, there are four minigames to give you
a break from all the aspiring artistry. These include a whack-a-mole-style
game and a maze where you must guide a pixel around without touching the
sides. There's also a colour-memory game, plus a take on block-puzzle games
featuring a picture of Hokusai's "The Great Wave."
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/198/941863_20070718_screen003.jpgHokusai's "The Great Wave" is the basis for the block puzzle game, just one
of the four bonus games on offer in Paint by DS.
Paint by DS looks like it will be incredibly simple in terms of design, but
painting enthusiasts may well find enjoyment and longevity within it. It's a
shame that there are no wireless features, as a multiplayer paint-off would
have been welcome, but the minigames should provide a pleasant distraction
from the intensity of the painting
Most of the games are for DS lite, which if I'm correct is just a hand held
games console. So it would not make much presentation imapact.
These following games are very light weight:
PAC DIX (for Nintendo DS)
Description: mischievous magician, known for playing pranks on poor
unsuspecting folks, created something known as "Ghost Ink," a fluid that
pretty much turns any drawing into evil and vicious ghost monsters. Any
ghost created with the ink ends up just as mischievous as the magician. Ink
ghosts have invaded books and paintings, causing trouble within those
realms, and now it's up to Pac-Man to wipe out the ghost problem by using
the "Ghost Pen," a device that allows him to enter the infested books and
paintings to clear out the bad guys. Pac-Pix is a game tailored specifically
for the Nintendo DS' system capabilities. By drawing Pac-Man characters in a
specific fashion (the mouth first, then the circle, all in one swoop), the
drawing will come to life and munch anything in his path. Players can
maneuver Pac-Man drawings in different directions by plotting pathways on
the screen for the scribble to follow.
Drawn to Life (For Nintendo DS) http://www.drawntolife.com.au/
Description: Drawn to Life takes players to the next level of interaction
and creativity on the Nintendo DS. Your exact drawings populate the game,
and no tedious animating or image manipulation is necessary. In other words,
your drawing comes to life!
Kirby: Drawn and Go (Nintendo)
Description: . For Kirby Canvas Curse, the pink sphere loses his arms and
legs and becomes a sort of parapalegic rolling dot that can be directed but
not controlled directly. Through use of the stylus, you can draw paths for
Kirby to follow, ultimately leading to an end of level goal or boss
encounter. The whole thing is like a platform game in some ways but
completely new and different in others. No matter how you pigeonhole it
though, it's clear this is one of the best games of 2005.
The Sims:
The Sims foreshadows a new kind of creative empowerment, where players can
be artists, and game environments can be 21st Century art studios. In The
Sims, players have the option to capture screenshots from the game,
introducing performance photography to computer games. Players can submit
their family sagas and teleport their families to other players, which are
also rated by most-viewed and most-downloaded categories. The photo essays
and personal objects posted by this vibrant community are inspiring new
directions for creating art in game worlds, and have the potential to
unleash a new generation of artists.

Hi Lorraine
I've had a look at the Nintendo site and there are not that many interactive games apart from Syms and some sports. I found 2 games on the following site: http://nintendo.about.com/od/toptens/tp/bestflashgames.htm. Though, I think you play them on the Wii through the internet (how it works, I don't know). The names of the games are Double Wire and Interactive Buddy. They get very good reviews on the above site.
If the release date for the paint game is definitely Feb 15th, I don't think it would be too late.
I'll have another look later.

Found this in a list of Wii games. What do you think - is the idea a runner? Would be and interesting social experiment if we could leave people to their own devices playing this, then record them in the act! Any ideas on how easy/difficult it would be to get hold of the equipment and games software necessary to run this?
PAINT BY DS
From The Developer: Ever fancied yourself as the new Van Gogh? Or how about Gould? Test your artistic skills and let your imagination and creativity shine through with Paint by DS! Swap your pencil and paintbrush for your DS stylus and re-create some of the art-world's most timeless classics like Hokusai's "The Waves" or Cezannes "Le Golfe de Marseille". Select your paintings from three different difficulty levels and you will be able to find the perfect level for your ability.

Just to say I would be able to get my hands on 4 Wii machines if we wanted to organise some sort of group game.
Regarding Haydn Shaughnessy and his Ten Cubed gallery, I was trying to access it on Second Life and it said it wasn't operational yet but you could 'drop' in. Grainne said there is a way to do this but I haven't figured it out yet! I would say both the real gallery in Kinsale and the virtual one are relatively new as the date at the bottom of the website is 2008. I still think he is worth contacting.

Scott Eaton is Creative Technical Director at Escape Studios in London. He studied traditional drawing, painting and sculpture in the academic tradition at the Florence Academy of Art. It was there that he began to integrate the lessons of the old masters with the techniques of modern computer graphics. Scott Eaton has kindly made available the images from his presentation on his website at http://www.scott-eaton.com/tate/index.htm.
Eaton is joined in conversation by Johnny Hardstaff, who initially worked in print graphics for fashion designers such as Paul Smith and Katherine Hamnett. Hardstaff’s first film and subsequent PlayStation commission got him signed to Ridley Scott Associates. Hi Everyone,
I think we need to get this in order tonight and decide who to approach first. We can only use 3 people so we need to prioritise. So far we have:
1. Mary's business contact from Havoc
2. John Gerrard - virtual artist (Orla's idea) - preferable as a live talk
3. Richard Minsky (Second Life Art) - live streaming (Jacinta's idea)
4. Irish based Cork artist Haydn Shaughnessy - Ten Cubed Gallery (Denise's idea)
5. Psychologist on the effects of virtual worlds/gaming etc on the individual (John's idea).
To make it interesting I think to pick a combination of artist, business and brain! So we need to set out in what order we should contact the artists, then if we can't get a business contact, or psychologist, use other artists as backup.
We shouldn't forget that we also want to include demonstrations / interactivity in the seminar, and also need to decide how that will be organised. I think it may be a good idea to video any gaming etc that we set up in order capture the response of participants.

Hi,
I think you are all bringing up very relevant points and proposals and should consider (for wed night) that your discussion on the day of seminar could hover somewhere around the situation of the solipsistic individualising aspect of the internet and (or versus) the communal and interactive potentials....?
what exactly is inter-activity? what are the components that are interacting?...individual & machine?, individual & themselves?.. individual& another individual through the medium of machine? individual&individual&machine through the medium of communication? individual&virtual community etc etc....and where is the situation of artwork in all this?
talk about all wed eve, but come as group with some defined proposals

Sounds good.
Not to put a downer on the idea, which is good, I said I'd summarise an
interesting article on the dangers of too much internet, etc., so here goes.
The article appeared in the Spanish daily, El Pais, 31 December, 2007, title:
"Generation MP3": On Their Way To Isolation.
While the writer, Francisco Manetto, writes mostly about MP3 players, I think
what he says is partly applicable to Second Life.
The main points he makes are that these devices have an addictive potential. He
quotes a psychologist saying that they can lead to anxiety, loss of self-esteem
and an increase in feelings of fear especially in adolescents.
The psychologist says that a lot of things can be addictive (such as reading),
but perhaps it is true to say that the internet is more attractive and
superfically at least more fun than reading. The psychologist says that the
alarm bells should start ringing if the person spends more than two hours
listening to their MP3. I wonder if say the same could be true for Second
Life?????
Communing with the internet/listening to your MP3 encourages isolation.
Apparently some basketball players from the NBA are forbidden from using
their MP3 20 minutes before a game so that they remember they are playing in a
team, and not on their own...
In discos in the South of Spain it is becoming more and more popular for the
dancers to be listening to different music on their MP3s, so that the dancer can
tune into either their own music or one of a number of songs/tracks being
played by a number of djs. This means everyone is dancing away together, but to
different music. The idea has been copyrighted. One of the advantages is that
you can have a wild disco and not disturb the neighbours. On the other hand, you
can't dance with anyone but yourself...
The US psychologist, Jean Twenge has written a book called 'Generation Me',
meaning people who listen all day to MP3s, but could this name also be applied
to Second Life avatars?
Twenge also referes to the iGeneration or the iGen, and says the 'i' stands
for'individualism', suggesting that excessive solo engagement with the
internet, etc, can result in a nasty selfishness and individualism.
As I say, all this is fairly negative stuff, but perhaps people in the class
with kids will have noticed some of the effects of excessive dependence on the
internet, etc...

Hi All
John is correct. There is considerable anxiety around use of the internet and the impact and addictive potential of second life. There are a lot of people in Ireland now active members of "second life communities".
I dont wish to add any negativity to our proposed theme, however we need to think about and maybe incorporate some of the social implications into our work.
Are people using the blog? If so could someone send me the address etc., and I'll attempt to engage with this technology again.

Dear Haydn
We are final year students in the Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dun Laoghaire. We are currently in the final stages of organising a seminar event entitled The Immersive-Aesthetic, as Spaces of Experience (full details attached). This seminar shall take the form of a number of events, performances and debates which will run on the campus throughout the day of Wednesday the 12th of March.
Throughout our research for the seminar over the last few months, your name emerged as a potential candidate to participate in our event. Your expertise in the area of virtual art would be a most welcome addition to our panel of theorists and practitioners. Your particular role with regard to the seminar would involve your participation through Second Life, perhaps a live tour of your virtual gallery Ten Cubed.
Our budget for the event allows us to offer our speakers fee of 195 euro to cover any expenses incurred.
It would be an honour if you could afford us your time to participate in our event. For further details do not hesitate to contact me by email at spacesofexperience@gmail.com or phone at 086-2354256. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Kind regards
Yours sincerely

I have contact details for one of the artist that will be exhibiting in Ten cubed gallery at the same time as the seminar http://nathanielstern.com/ Stern is currently doing a PHD in Trinity. We could get him to Teleport into the seminr so he could discuss his work while we are doing the gallery visit.
He had his email address and contact details on his website.
Department of Electr.nic and Electrical Engineering
Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland
e: nathaniel DOT stern AT gmail DOT com

Also there is another Irish based female artist that we could see if is interested as well as would be more fun if we had a good few people online.

Hi all,
At last night Paint Workshop we discussed the following: seen that we have the seminar presentation next tuesday, I feel that we all need to be in the same place for a few hours, would it suit everyone to come in next Monday evening seen that we don't have workshops due to the full time week to prepare for presentation on Tuesday.
Also for all who hasn't logged into second life, could you please log in and create your avatar go to the Ten Cube gallery and send us a postcard this will be proof that you have made it in, as we really need everyone to understand the process. For anyone having difficulty within Second life we can go through all these issues on Monday evening.

Hi,
we didn’t hold the seminar class today due to lack of numbers (…thesis…I know…fair enough!… though I expect full attendance for next Tuesday’s presentation by group 4 and the follow-up full group planning meeting…all groups meet at 2pm room A116).
Due to this I am instead going to send you a range of important points in a series of e-mails over next few days. Please read them and follow up on what is required and please update your blogs with the most current info and relevant links etc.
Don’t forget to Bcc me on the e-mails you are sending, Bcc allows you to send to me without giving out my address in the e-mail info. The reason I am asking you to do this is so that there is a back up record of whatever you are agreeing with the participants in case of any future confusions (in relation to institutional matters such as around fee due etc.)
As you are organising your speakers/participants you will also need to put some work into developing a critical framework around your particular group event. To start this process it would be a good idea for you all to look at how different events promote themselves in the contemporary art environment. Identify some events that from your point of view look interesting and would be something you would like to attend. Look at the phrasing of their information and consider how they present what they are going to do, how they contextualise the event and what kind of message is coming across in terms of things like prospective audience, kind of art practices that it relates to, kind of ‘image’ they are projecting, what references can you detect/are embedded in the promotional/critical info…etc. A good place to start would be www.e-flux.com where you will get an international listings of various events. Go through some of their archive and choose one or two events that have some relevance to the type of situation you might be planning for your seminar group (some that are recent and have a similar approach to what you are aiming for might be; http://www.e-flux.com/shows/view/5013 , http://www.e-flux.com/shows/view/5054 or closer to home see www.artinthelifeworld.com . Read the blurb, follow the links and consider how these promotional infos manage to create a critical framework for what they are presenting. The try to devise something similar for your groups event.
Message from Sinead 29/01/08
The letter below is a very good template and you can amend as is required to customise it for each speaker, (ie. if you already know the person you can be a bit more informal etc.) …just one minor change suggested…the phrase “your name emerged as probable candidate to participate in our event. Your expertise in the area of (curatorship and installation etc.) would be a most welcome addition to our panel of theorists and practitioners…” might be better phrased as ‘your name emerged as potential candidate to participate in our event as your expertise in the area of (curatorship and installation etc.) has been a focal point of discussion in our research and would be a most welcome addition to our panel of theorists and practitioners’ (‘probable’ implies that they are likely to be there, ‘potential’ implies that you would like them to be there!...and it is good to let people know that the group has been specifically interested in their work.
All groups, if not already in action, should have contacted their proposed participants this week. I will be forwarding this eve an IADT logo template for inclusion on any e-mails.

The Immersive-Aesthetic, as Spaces of Critical Experience.
Date: Wednesday 12th March
Time: 2pm-9pm
Location: Dun Laoghaire Institute of art, Design and Technology,
Kill Avenue,
Dun Laoghaire,
Co. Dublin,
Ireland.
The Immersive-Aesthetic as Spaces of Experience, is the title of a seminar event organized by the final year students of Visual Art Practice in IADT. The objective of the event is to create a number of individual situations of interaction throughout the day which will allow us to expose and examine contemporary theories regarding, contextuality, aesthetics and the role of the art audience.
The objectives of the Seminar will manifest themselves through the participation and engagement of the audience with the eclectic range of art based performances, talks and events specifically devised to evoke discussion surrounding many key concerns in contemporary art practice.
Rather than consign theory and practice to their traditional polar opposites, this seminar event shall create a dynamic informal ambience, through which the two elements can merge to create a critically engaged and thought provoking environment.

Monday night both labs are free, the audio doesn't work in A024, so it's probably best to use A026.

It should be no problem to use the fine art mac lab (A024) or the mac lab A026 on Monday evening, I will double check this with Lynda Devanny

About Ten Cubed
Jan 18th, 2008 by haydn
We’re gearing up for the launch of Ten Cubed on the 31st Jan and 1st Feb (depending on your time zone) and Bennet asked me to post a little about what we’re doing there and why. Ten Cubed is a new virtual gallery - why Ten Cubed? Because ultimately I would like it to be owned by a thousand people (Ten Cubed).About a year ago I decided to set up a real life gallery. The reason was simply that I love media art but couldn’t find galleries that specialise in it. Now I have a media-art gallery and on a day-to-day basis experience the fact that the audience for this is global rather than local. Media-art is beginning to find an audience in Ireland but its real audience is urban anywhere.I can connect to some of that audience through a website . But what I can’t do through a website is join people in appreciating the art not when they could be anywhere from New York to Naples. Nor could many of the audience really appreciate the artwork they’d simply be viewing a 2D image.Nor can I easily introduce the artists to people who might love their work. If you want to know more about those artists, by the way, then scroll down and read the last blog post. With Ten Cubed I can do these things. I can stand with you and admire the work and together we can analyse and criticise. What I can also do is make room to showcase art that my physical gallery could not exhibit - because of its size and because of the sheer impracticality of giving over all my space to one large work. In Ten Cubed I can show any amount of art and at scale. I can also help promote and encourage artists working in a virtual medium. What Ten Cubed is giving me is a way to work like a large global gallery exhibiting great work at whatever scale I choose. I truly hope that matters to you too and that you can join me there. You will be excited by the work and by the design of the gallery - Bennet has done an exceptional job. And do read the post below - it gives you a paragraph on our first five great artists.

I think it would be a good idea to live stream an artist from Second Life. How do we go about doing that?
I was looking up more on Haydn Shaughnessy and there's plenty there. Attached is a bit from the following website:
http://www.depoconsulting.com/index.html
He's head of new media products at this place. The attachment gives a bit more info on Ten Cubed which is to open on Jan 31st or Feb 1st. I think he would be a very good contact, if he is willing to participate, as he seems to be heavily involved in the virtual world. He also has a blog site.
We had better finalise our contacts and write to them by tomorrow or Wed latest. We have a draft letter (which Mary sent you) that will be finalised by this evening.
Message from Jacinta 26/01/08
Are we still going to try and set up some live streaming from second life with some artists from there ? If yes, has anybody made any contact in second life yet ?
Bye,
Message from John 24/01/08
Here is a proposed wording for our seminar:
Is all art virtual imagination?
The opportunities offered by the programmed world to create an immersive aesthetic experience.
Also, another website worth checking out:
Message from Sinead 24/01/08
Another thing that might need to be considered in the overall grouping of contributors would be some variety/spread of different practices represented and also what about’ is the issue of gender an issue’? (ie. there are not many women suggested as participants…you may want to ensure some balance without this actually becoming an issue?)
Message from Sinead 24/01/08
Attached please find the recent changes and updates to the seminar proposals. You should all contact your participants this week. Allocate one person to each potential participant. John Kenny has done up a template that he can now circulate to all which can be modified as you require to suit each individual participant and group. Also modify the general text if you are sending out requests to potential sponsors (who should also be contacted this week). I understand the thesis deadlines are coming up over next few weeks and will be considerate of this but you still need to contact people to give them advance notice so this will be enough of a task and we will use next tuesday to briefly update on that specific progress. The following Tuesday 5th Feb group 4 will make their presentation and we will discuss the full group planning issues that are arising.
I am going to send the attached seminar update to your other tutors to have a look and it will allow them to propose potential contributors who might be relevant, available and interested in participating or attending and I will ask them to give us the contact details of these people. This can be used as a back-up if any of your invitees cannot decline the invitation.
Please remember to specify to those you are inviting what you would like them to participate in or contribute (also consider the option of offering them the alternative option of coming and presenting on their own work in relation to your topic…sometimes people prefer to have control of what and how they will participate).
Please remember when looking for sponsors that you can offer them advertising in relation to both whatever advertising you arrange in relation to the event and on the day and also they can be credited in the end of year catalogue and on the website.
As a back up please cc me on any general group/class e-mails and Bcc me on any e-mails you send out as invites/ sponsor requests etc.
Any time you want something put on official IADT headed notepaper, no problem just e-mail me it and I’ll print it out for you.

The experience of the event as art practice….
Interesting to note the dual meaning of function…ie ‘function’ as how something is used, its purpose, an action or role etc and ‘function’ as an event, ceremony, ritual etc.
