Group 2 Statement
This project explores the idea of sound and its properties affecting a live space of experience. We are concerned with the notion of the non physical in art and the interactive element of sound. During the event live spaces of experience will be created, to examine the non physical effects sound has on the space it occupies. The aim is to transform the public spaces through the creation of an immersive aesthetic situation produced with the medium of sound.
Our three invited guests are Dennis McNulty, Peter Forde and Noel J Brady.
Dennis McNulty's work will deal with the creation of an interactive experience, through a conversation with sound. For this, Dennis McNulty will respond to a series of sound recordings with his own interpretation through sound.
Peter Forde, will look at the physicality of sound, the sensory element of sound and how the overall space can be affected by using sound. His work is based in the use of new technology in art. He has chosen to use 'Pure Data' a new programme to catalogue the sounds which the group will be working on in order to create a live space of experience.
The event will conclude with a discussion on the sound events, in an attempt to analyse how they altered the live space. The architect Noel J Brady will contribute to this discussion around the concepts and ideas created by the live sound pieces and how sound interacts with architecture to create an immersive aesthetic experience.

I have set up a blog for our group
http://spacestwo.blogspot.com
This is for group two interior/exterior spaces
Here is a suggestion of a proposal for Group 2's 'Space of Experience'
-We would like to set up paradoxical spaces; we have taken the title of the seminar, for example, and set up a polarity between the element of 'space' and that of 'experience', space been thought of as 'now' or the future, and experience being considered as a reference to the past or tradition. The 'space of experience' that we would set up would be that between 'spatial experiences', eg. Labrynths or spatial puzzles, and 'experienced space', eg. spaces with a long history and thus 'genus loci', or spaces where a very significant historical events have taken place. Other paradoxes considered might be: 'sound images' vs. 'Image sounds', 'historical futures' vs.'future histories', 'interiorized exteriors' vs. 'exteriorized interiors'.
If anyone wants to add anything to that please do, thanks
I posted a commenrt earlier, but, not sure were it went to ...
Anyway, I wanted to suggest a 'plan b' space for Dennis McNulty, just in case it rains. I think the Atrium would be ideal.
Another thing. I am not sure if we came to the limnits of our guest list, but I went to Olafur Eliasson's web site (www.olafureliasson.net) and have a thought maybe we should invite him as well. He deals with space big time.
James Turrel is interesting to look at in terms of 'spaces of experience', space is important in his work as is the viewer's experience. His series 'Light Reign' could be looked at in terms of our outside being inside idea.

...I don't think we're going to be able to get him to talk at our seminar day, but I just thought it's worth seeing how other artists have worked with similar ideas...

exhibition dealing with the elements of outer and inner space, more concerned with video than sound, but interesting motives to make work...
this lady susan philipsz works primarily with sound, film and space.think shes based in berlin at the minute.her work deals with the spatial properties of sound and with the relationships between sound and architecture.although i'm not all that sure that her pieces actually work, i think her ideas and intentions, insofar as wanting "to lure the listener out of the present, to catapult them from the 'here and now' into a more private and personal state of mind" are interesting.she tries to make use of the emotive and psychological properties of sound, in order to alter individual consciousness.some of her stuff is on youtube.like i said, doesn't necessarily do it for me,but her ideas are interesting.she could work well as a speaker.
also, the janfamily, could be worth checking out.they're a collective and their work takes on different forms, song clothes photography and film. although you might already be familiar with their book.heres a link to it online.

most of the work documented in it is quite performative.again, their ideas are interesting.the chapter titles included 'inside inside', 'inside outside', 'outside inside', and 'outside outside'..so as you'd imagine, theyre dealing with inner and outer spaces

Hey Anthony McCall has an exhibition on in the Serpentine gallery at the moment, here's a link to it

it fits in with our idea of the effects of the non-physical.

Perhaps he could be another one for our wish list...

interesting
I checked with Jeff to see if we could record a sound in 5.1 surround sound, and he said that he just happens to have a 5.1 surround sound mic. The thing is, if we wanted to record a sound with those qualities ( the sound could be St. Patrick's Cathedral Bells, for example)then we would have to walk around the Cathedral while the bells rang, and with a wall close to our backs, so that the sound would come from more that two directions. We would thus end up with direct sound and reflected, ambient sound. Anyway, whenever we are ready to go, the equipment and guidance are there.
I also have copied that essay that I spoke about - it is not called "On The Spectral in Art", as previously thought, but rather, "The Other Side". It was published in Frieze 106. I gave the copy of the essay to Aisling to pass around, and if you want a colour cover for the essay, I copied several by accident, and you can find them folded beneath the drawer unit on my desk - help yourselves:)
I will contact Noel J. Brady in the morning.

Bullet point of 'critical framework' for group presentation, tomorrow 20th Feb
- The first point of our critical framework is concerned with thr first speaker who we have confirmed, Peter Forde. In relation to Peter Forde, we are looking at the physicality of sound, the sensory element of sound and how the overall space can be affected by using sound. He has chosen to use 'Pure Data' a new programme to catalogue the sounds which the group will be working on.
- Our second probable speaker is Dennis McNutly. With Dennis McNulty's work we are concerned with an interactive experience, a conversation with sound and how sounds can answer each other. For this we will be recording sounds ( perhaps concerned with an overall theme of interior sounds vs exterior sounds or sound images vs non sound images) and having Dennis McNutly respond to these sounds with his own sounds.
- We are concerned in general with the non phsical in art, the interactive element of sound and the other issues raised concerning the two speakers we have selected. We are interested in the use of new technology in art especially in terms of the programmes Peter Forde uses. We are interested in creating live spaces of experience.

This sounds fantastic. It seems like a very interesting project with many interesting possibilities.
I find the live experience particularly fascinating for experiencing art. To create art in this live community environment is a truly genuine interpretation of culture.
Please send me as much information as you can. I have an idea of what I could do to help but with more information I can solidify this into a more productive manner.
Another thing I am interested in is finding out about the theories behind the work of the students. It is important to stay true to your art theories and not to get swept away in the medium of modern technology. That said a collective theory created together would be wonderful.
Planning the tools to use would be important to ensure we get the maximum productivity for the time invested.
Best Regards
Peter

Meabh,
This does sound good. Something that I might suggest for playing with space is that you record sounds using two microphones on either size of something similar to a head. Apparantly this records sound as to how it bounces off your head and when played in stereo. You could go into 5.1 surround but this may do the trick, particularly with less reliance on hardware capabilities.
I will do some work in pure data and let you know how things look. But I will not have enough time for about a week.
Peter
I had a coffee this morning with that architect that I mentioned, and he seemed enthusiastic. I gave him several ideas on how to 'plug-in' to our seminar, and he seemed very interested. He will go away and make up a draft of what he is proposing to do; it will probably be a presentation of 20 - 25 minutes, followed by his participation in the discussion. Check out his website on http://homepage.eircom.net/~njbrady1/ The name of his practice is NJBA A+U, and they were one of the firms that took part in the design competition for the U2 tower - see it on the website, as wee as other projects that they have done.
sorry, that should have read, 'as well as other projects'
Here is another "dramatically":) useful link with regards to sound images. I think this one is particularly interesting. But that's just me.
